Exploring the development of "domestic helpers"

The Household Appliances exhibition is the first exhibition of its kind in the history of NTM, and one of the few exhibitions of its type in Central Europe. Over an area of almost 600 square meters, it presents the development of "domestic helpers" – technology that facilitates hygiene, cleaning, washing and ironing, sewing and mending clothes, food preparation, etc. against the background of the history of the Czech lands from roughly the mid-19th century to the present day.

The exhibition is arranged in retrospective order - from the present to the past. Visitors can learn about current production and development, including the need for computer design and student design visions, the range of appliances during the communist era, the impressive pioneering work of industrial designers in the post-war period, the origins of the traditional manufacturers of the First Republic as well as of later manufacturers, the phenomenon of electrification and the promotion of new appliances in the form of advertising, trade fairs and department store offers, with the beginnings of the production and use of coffee machines. Lastly, there is a display of curious machines for the home, which were collected by Vojta Náprstek in the second half of the 19th century. A timeline permeates the entire exhibition, which includes not only necessary historical data, but also graphically depicts world developments from the mid-19th through the end of the 20th century.

The exhibition is made up mainly of objects from the NTM’s collections of Household Appliances and Industrial Design. A large amount of the collection of objects from contemporary production was donated by the leading Czech manufacturers Tescoma and ETA.
